Aspen Camp of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Master Plan

Creating accessible spaces, upgraded amenities, and a stronger connection to nature.

Reimagining a Unique Colorado Retreat.

The Aspen Camp of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, located along Snowmass Creek in Colorado, is a one-of-a-kind retreat that celebrates Deaf culture while connecting people with nature. Despite its incredible setting and mission, the camp faced significant challenges: aging infrastructure, limited accessibility, and the need for long-term planning to better serve its community. To support the camp’s mission and prepare for future growth, a master plan was developed that outlines enhancements to accessibility, upgrades to infrastructure, and the creation of new opportunities for recreation, education, and community gathering—all guided by DeafSpace principles.

The Challenge: Accessibility and Growth

For decades, the camp has offered transformative experiences for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. But as participation grew, existing facilities were stretched thin. Barriers like limited ADA accessibility, outdated infrastructure, and constrained gathering areas limited the camp’s potential. The Board of Directors sought a clear roadmap for both immediate upgrades and long-term growth.

Our Approach: Designing with DeafSpace Principles

Design Workshop partnered with the camp to develop a comprehensive master plan. Rooted in DeafSpace principles—a design philosophy that prioritizes visual connections, intuitive wayfinding, and safe, inclusive spaces—the plan focused on both preserving the camp’s natural character and enhancing accessibility.

Key priorities included:

  • Improved ADA pathways and parking

  • A fire truck turnaround for safety

  • Expanded trails and nature play areas

  • Upgraded gathering spaces for community and performance

  • Outdoor learning and art installations

Features that Connect People and Place

The plan introduces new opportunities for recreation, education, and connection with nature:

Outdoor Classrooms & Performance Stage

Flexible spaces for programs and gatherings

Sensory Garden & Nature Play

Environments designed to engage multiple senses

Astronomy Platform & Moon Calendar

Spaces that tie cultural traditions to natural rhythms

Rotating Art Exhibits & Clay Works Studio

Highlighting creativity and self-expression

Fishing Hole & Climbing Wall

Outdoor activities that build confidence and community

The Outcome: A Roadmap for the Future

The resulting master plan provides a clear path for phased improvements across the 17-acre site. By centering Deaf culture, inclusivity, and environmental stewardship, the plan ensures the camp can continue to grow and inspire future generations.

As one board member shared:

“We overcame many hurdles in the last few years and are in a position to grow exponentially. Design Workshop is part of this enormous contribution to our growth.”
